Professionalism and Experience
I lettered in track and football at James B. Castle High School, where I graduated in 1985. I also competed at the professional level of Bodyboarding and was ranked among the top in the World. I graduated with a Master's of Education in Counseling and Guidance in 1996. I have been providing individual and Group therapy to at-risk youth and their families for the Department of Education as a Behavioral Specialist for over 20 years. I was also honored as the Private Provider of the Year for Outstanding Service to Children with Special Needs and their Families by the Windward Community Children's Council and the State of Hawaii's Department of Health. I have over 20 years of working in the non-profit sector and 10-plus years in the private sector.
I have also provided professional training, education, and consultation to Individuals, mental health care providers, schools, agencies, and National Conferences on topics of Hawaii Identity Development, Using Communities to practice to Advance School Mental Health, Culturally Competent Counseling, Minority Identity Development Model: Counseling Hawaiians, Counseling Hawaiian Adolescents, College Sports Recruiting, Playing in the Zone, Mental Game skills, and Peak Performance Skills.
I have also been consulting individuals and groups in the Sydney Banks Three Principles for over 25 years. In 1998, I was fortunate to get hired by Hawaii Counseling and Education (HCEC) as a Clinical Therapist by founder Christine Heath. While at HCEC, I was introduced to and trained in the three principles. This is where I met Sydney Banks and became a friend and student of his. I have continued sharing his principles and making a difference in people's lives for the last 28 years.
My research interest is in Peak Performance in sports and life, Hawaiian Identity Development, and The Three Principles and strategies for counseling Hawaiians. I have published numerous research articles.
I have also worked with Little League Teams, High School Teams, and College and Professional Athletes on the topic of Peak Performance. Helping some teams win conference and State titles.
Kiaka is also the founder of Islandbuiltathletes.com. A website assisting student-athletes in the transition from High School to College.
I love traveling with my wife and three children. I enjoy surfing, helping others, watching Baseball and Football, and just spending time with my family.
